In my 11.5" SBR I have the Wolff XP extractor spring combined with the D-Fender ring. I run a Enidine hydraulic buffer and this causes the extractor to hang onto the brass for so long that the rifle ejects forward between 1 and 2 o'clock forward instead of the typical 4-5 o'clock behind you ejection.

The AR-15 has been grossly "under-extractored" from Day One. The recent Army-recommended gold spring, the stronger one, isn't enough on its own. Get a D-Fender, or if you can't justify the cost (geez-o-pete, it is only ten or twelve bucks. One mag of ammo costs more than that.), then get the O-ring from Brownells.

I would recommend an O-ring if firing large volumes of rounds, steel cased ammunition (even Hornady's steel stuff), and/or in dirty, dusty, or otherwise harsh environments.

Didn't even bother to use the o-rings. The gun kicks brass out with authority now. I have about 3k rounds thur it now with no issues. On a side note, how was the Military able to get a carbine to cycle/eject reliability prior to the M4? Meaning prior to the H buffer and extractor o-ring.

Extractor tension is good, up until the point you have failures to go into battery from the extractor tension. I have never reached that point with an O-ring on an AR15. That being said, it is unnecessary on midlength and rifle length gas systems. All of my carbine length gas (or less) guns get an O-ring and H2 or H3 buffer).
